Beef Rules

  1.  The South Dakota Junior Point Show Association (SDJPSA) will be giving an award to juniors who accumulate the greatest number of points in a given year in each breed. The SDJPSA calendar will run from October 1, 2009to September 30, 2010. Points start at zero each year beginning at Oct. 1.
     
  2. Breeds will need to have a representation of 5 head entered per breed per sex for the year to maintain breed representation and to receive year end awards. Example: There needs to be 5 head of Angus Heifers for participants who show Angus Heifers to receive an award.
     
  3. Points shall be earned on the following basis:

  4. Anytime an exhibitor is named champion or reserve champion of any breed, he or she will receive the same number of points as the highest point-getting class winner of that breed rather than the number of points for his or her original class. In addition, the breed champion will receive 5 bonus points and the reserve champion will receive 3 bonus points.
     
  5. All points recorded in a class are based on actual number of junior class cattle that enter the showing regardless if they are point show members or not. The points you receive will be based on your actual placing in the junior show.
          
  6. If one person exhibits more than one head in a breed, only the best placing will be recorded per breed.
     
  7. Sanctioned shows are encouraged to offer breed & age classes for heifers, regardless of the number entered.
     
  8. SDJP program will conform to any specific rules established by that particular breed association.
     
  9. In each division, the cattle must be entered in the name of the individual, the individual’s immediate family or the individual’s immediate family’s ranch name. They must be shown by the individual for any points to be recorded. Even though a substitute show person may be granted by the SDJPSA, points will not be awarded to an exhibitor unless he or she is in attendance to show his or her own animals.
     
  10. The SDJPSA age requirement is at least 8 years old and not older than 21 years old as of Oct. 1 2009.
     
  11. Year-end points are calculated for beef heifers and steers by totaling points earned by an exhibitor. Winners in each breed for heifers and steers will be recognized.
     
  12. A $10 annual fee/exhibitor is required to participate.
     
  13. First place ties will be broken by which youth attends the most junior shows.
     
  14. Fall heifers are eligible to participate. Market heifers are eligible to participate. Please indicate market or breeding heifer when registering. Cow/calf pairs do not qualify. Youth are to check with each individual show for specific arrival and release times and dates.
     
  15. Entries will be accepted anytime throughout the showing year. There will be a 10 day grace period after each show in which
    individuals can get entry forms in so points from that show will be counted.

Beef Showmanship Rules

The South Dakota Junior Point Show Association (SDJPSA) will be giving an award to juniors who accumulate the greatest number of points in a given year in each age division- Jr. Jr. Showmanship (ages 8-10),Jr. Showmanship (ages 11-13),and Sr. Showmanship (ages 14-21).

  1. The SDJPSA calendar will run from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010. Points start at zero each year beginning at Oct. 1.
     
  2. If the participant’s age division will change between shows; please select the age division in which he/she will be participating in the most sanctioned shows.
     
  3. Age divisions will need to have a representation of 5 participants entered to receive year end awards.
     
  4. Points shall be earned on the following basis:

  6. The judge’s discretion will be used; if only the top five in an age division are placed only those five will receive points; however the shows will be encouraged to place everyone who participates.
     
  7. A $5 fee/exhibitor is required to participate.
     
  8. At such shows as the Summer Spotlight and State Fair, members will receive only the highest point value from one breed showmanship contest they participate in. Ex. If you have 10pts in Chi showmanship, and 15 pts in Hereford showmanship at the state fair only the Hereford pts will count in your overall score for the year end prize.

Market ewes and wethers will be split by breed for year end awards. Breeding sheep will be split by breeds with yearling ewes and ewe lambs receiving year-end awards. The SDJPSA calendar will run from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010. Points start at zero each year beginning at Oct. 1.
     

  2. Breeds will need to have a representation of 5 head entered per breed division for the year to maintain breed representation and to receive year end awards. Example: There needs to be 5 head of Speckle Face market lambs for participants who show Speckle Face market lambs to receive an award.
